Subjects: Children • Ministry • Teachers • Influence • Sunday School • Recruiting

Synopsis: A simple poem.

Purpose:
To reinforce the importance of the children's education ministry.
Written for a teacher recruitment Sunday,
the purpose is to suggest that kids will hear about Jesus everywhere,
so shouldn't we make sure they hear the right stories.

Staging: Front & center. Very simple.

1 Character: Terry or Terri, your choice.
A fourth or fifth grader with a real ability to ham this up,
or an equally able adult dressed as a little kid.

Props: Nothing required.
Consider a ball glove and hat or other hand prop referenced in the poem.

Note: This needs to be really corny
to keep the point at the end from being overly biting.
You want to make the folks think with this, you don't need them mad.

[Terry walks out, bows politely and begins]

Learning about Jesus.
A poem by Terry Johnson.

Learning about Jesus is easy to do,

It happens every day.

At church, at home, and at school, too,

even when I play.

I don't know about quoting the Bible,

nobody has taught me how.

But I listen all week and know that I'm liable,

to be what I'm learning right now.

On Monday I played softball,

we almost won the game.

But I struck out with men on base,

and the coach yelled Jesus' name.

On Tuesday I watched a movie,

about this Jesus guy.

He stored up all those guns in Waco,

and then he had to die.

On Wednesday in my science class,

the teacher spoke of apes.

When someone asked about creation,

he said that had no place.

On Thursday I knelt down to pray.

I did it just because

A TV preacher said I'd get lots of stuff,

like from Santa Clause.

Then Friday on Jerry Springer,

this pretty lady said,

We are Jesus and he is us,

and we're never really dead.

Yesterday daddy slammed the door

on two guys riding bikes.

He got mad and swore that Christians

all were sorry sights.

On Sunday, here I am at church,

I should be in my class.

Learning more about Jesus,

and what will come to pass.

But they said there's not a teacher,

for every single age.

So I guess I'll wait for Monday,

to learn more of Jesus' way.

[Curtsey or bow, then leave]

The End
